NYC midterm election: does your ballot count after a race is called?

Yes. A news organization’s race call does not cancel the counting of valid ballots, and New York City’s election-night totals exclude affidavit ballots and some mail ballots. NYC Board of Elections canvass notice

What is included tonight?

Ballot category Treatment in the initial report
Early in-person voting Included
Election Day voting Included as reported
Valid mail ballots already canvassed Included
Affidavit ballots Excluded from election-night reporting

The board schedules canvass preparations for November 4 at 10 a.m. Its notice gives November 10 as the receipt deadline for absentee and early-mail ballots postmarked by Election Day, and November 16 for specified military and overseas categories. Those are receipt deadlines, not promises that every contest will remain unresolved until then.

Why call a winner if counting continues?

A race call answers who will win, while the canvass establishes the full count. AP describes using returns, remaining ballots and reporting patterns to determine when a trailing candidate has no path to victory. It does not wait for every routine counting step in every contest. How AP declares winners

For a voter, the consequence is straightforward: a call is not a reason to assume an eligible, timely ballot is discarded. For someone comparing candidates, it means the winner can be settled while the final margin remains unfinished.

Does the NYC count tell me who won governor?

The governor is a statewide office. NYC totals alone cannot establish the statewide result. The city’s 2026 ballot also includes congressional and state legislative contests, with the exact offices determined by where a voter lives. NYC Votes ballot guide

Use the contest’s full geography when comparing a lead with outstanding ballots. A citywide mail-ballot total cannot establish how many votes remain in one Assembly district or how they will divide between candidates.

The NYC Board of Elections homepage links separately to unofficial election-night returns and certified results. Start there for city reporting. Keep a media projection, a current lead and a certified result labeled separately when sharing an update.

That distinction is visible in the changing New York governor margin.
