For a first visit, give Times Square about 30–45 minutes, ideally after dark, and attach it to a Midtown walk or a Broadway evening. That is a planning allowance, not a minimum: you can see the lights without turning the surrounding shops and ticketed attractions into an all-day itinerary.
The useful distinction is between visiting Times Square and staying there. A short stop delivers the billboards and street scene; a hotel makes sense chiefly if nearby theaters and transit match the rest of your trip.
Where to go and when
For a simple first visit, concentrate on Broadway around 42nd Street, then walk north toward Father Duffy Square and the red steps near 47th Street. Duffy Square is the northern triangle between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, from 45th to 47th Streets. The red staircase sits above the TKTS ticket booth and serves as a public viewing area. NYC Parks explains the square’s layout.
Choose your timing by what you want:
- For the illuminated scene: arrive after dark. You do not need to stay until midnight.
- For a quick look without an evening commitment: visit during your Midtown sightseeing day, then continue elsewhere on foot.
- For Broadway: work backward from your performance time. Keep the plaza visit separate from the time needed for dinner and theater entry.
- For public art: Midnight Moment synchronizes contemporary art across participating digital billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight, with a new work each month. The program operates 364 nights a year; check the official Midnight Moment schedule for your date.
You can enjoy the view from plaza level without climbing the steps. If the staircase is crowded or unavailable, there is no need to wait for it to make the visit worthwhile.
A compact walk: Bryant Park → Times Square → Restaurant Row
Allow roughly 75–90 minutes for this suggested walk and pauses, excluding a meal, shopping, a ticket queue or a show. Reverse it if you want to finish at Bryant Park rather than near the theaters.
1. Begin at Bryant Park
Start with a seated break before entering Times Square. Bryant Park lies between 40th and 42nd Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues, behind the New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. If the library interests you, make it a separate stop rather than assuming an interior visit fits into this short route. Bryant Park’s directions establish the starting point.
From the park’s northwest corner at Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street, walk west along 42nd Street to Broadway.
2. Walk north through Times Square
Turn north along Broadway toward Duffy Square. Pause for the screens and photographs, moving out of the walking flow before stopping. Continue to the red steps near 47th Street for another perspective on the same scene.
This is enough for a first look. Add a store or indoor attraction only if it genuinely interests your group—not because you have reached a famous intersection and feel obliged to fill more time.
3. Continue west for dinner
From the red steps, head west on 47th Street to Eighth Avenue, south one block, then west onto 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. This is Restaurant Row, a useful dining block to consider before choosing somewhere beside the billboards. The Times Square Alliance’s dining guide provides restaurant options across the district.
With theater tickets, choose dinner by the actual theater address, not just the label “Times Square.” Build in time to pay, walk over and enter; follow your theater’s arrival guidance. Skip the full Restaurant Row leg if it takes you away from your venue.
Broadway tickets: decide how flexible you are
If one particular show is central to your trip, book through its official ticketing channel ahead of time. Treat TKTS as an option for a flexible evening, not a promise that your preferred production will be available.
TKTS Times Square is at Broadway and West 47th Street, beneath the red steps. TDF sells tickets for same-day performances and next-day matinees at discounts of up to 50%. As of October 2026, the displayed discounted prices include an $8 per-ticket service charge; additional non-TDF charges may apply. Check TDF’s live availability and booth hours before organizing your afternoon around a purchase.
A ticket queue is extra time, not part of the short walking allowance above.
Getting there—and deciding whether to stay nearby
Times Sq–42 St is the straightforward subway destination. The complex serves the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R and W, plus the 42nd Street Shuttle, with service varying by line and time. The A, C and E connect through the adjoining 42 St–Port Authority station. Use the MTA’s station and transfer information to plan your journey, and check current service before leaving.
For a practical break, Bryant Park has public restrooms near its northeast corner by 42nd Street. As of October 2026, their listed hours are 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, subject to change. They are not a midnight fallback; check their hours before relying on them.
A nearby hotel is worth considering for a short, theater-focused trip. If you want a calmer walk home, compare addresses off the main plaza rather than treating every “Times Square hotel” as the same location. Ask about room orientation and noise; proximity alone cannot tell you how a room will feel.
Use our neighborhood-base comparison to make that choice, and place this walk within a five-day itinerary grouped by area rather than making a separate cross-city journey just for the lights.
