Take Metro-North’s New Haven Line to Grand Central, or Amtrak to Penn Station/Moynihan Train Hall. Both serve New Haven Union Station. Choose the Manhattan terminal that works for your plans, then compare the actual departure, fare and return trip.

The ticket systems are separate. Confirm the operator and terminal before paying; a ticket described only as “New Haven to New York” is not enough information to compare the two journeys.
What Metro-North’s Published Fare Table Lists
CTDOT’s July 2026 New Haven Line fare table places New Haven in Zone 21 and lists these adult fares to or from Grand Central/Harlem–125th Street:

The same table lists a $49 weekday day pass and $40.50 weekend day pass. Compare the ticket offered for your exact travel date in TrainTime, including eligibility and pass conditions, before buying. The table is a published reference rather than a live quote.
For illustration, two adult off-peak one-way tickets at the listed fare total $40.50. Two peak one-way tickets total $54.50. Those calculations help you compare the options displayed in the app; they do not establish which ticket category applies to your train.
Amtrak has no single comparable route-wide fare. Search the actual outbound and return trains on Amtrak’s New Haven route page. An advertised starting price for another date is not a reliable budget for your trip.
Compare The Complete Journey
A cheaper or faster train can still leave you with a less convenient trip across Manhattan. Check:
- The scheduled departure and arrival for each candidate train.
- Travel from Grand Central or Penn Station to your actual destination.
- Your return terminal and departure time.
- Any service alert or connection shown for the selected journey.
Use the operator’s schedule rather than a single quoted journey time. Stopping patterns and train services vary. A journey-time record for one express departure does not describe every train on the line.
If you are connecting to another intercity train at Penn Station, compare an Amtrak arrival there with the time needed to cross Manhattan from Grand Central. For a walking itinerary, group your plans by neighborhood so the arrival terminal supports the rest of your day.
Start With Union Station In Your Search
Union Station is the straightforward starting point for comparing the two operators. State Street is a separate New Haven stop; use it only when the current schedule explicitly shows a suitable departure or arrival.
Metro-North tickets are available through its supported mobile ticketing and station machines. Amtrak sells tickets through its own website, app and station channels. Hartford Line passengers should check their full connection at New Haven, not only the onward New York segment.
Before leaving, confirm station, operator, terminal, outbound train and return train. Recheck live service status, and keep the correct ticket ready for the operator you selected.
